I put "..je retire les vêtements de la machine à laver", but not marked as an alternative. Does that work as well as "je sors..."?

You are right that "retire" is a correct alternative. It is now a correct option.

Both sortir and retirer can be used transitively.
Retirer in the sense of enlever, to lift out or pull (sth) out or remove (sth) or even withdraw (money from a cash point).
Sortir in the sense (mettre hors de), get / bring / take (sth) out.
