It seems it should be "il était" because you are referring specifically to the TGV, and not trains generally.
Can I translate:
"These experiences would make me a better cook,"
as
"Ces expériences *me feraient* un meilleur cuisinier,"
[the given answer which I am not arguing with = "Ces expériences *feraient de moi* un meilleur cuisinier,"]
