I know that in direct pronouns are me, te, lui ... and they are used when the noun comes after a preposition but why is it m'aide and not l'aide?

I can't seem to differentiate between the cojugate form of etre and avoir when used with the first person Je. Par exemple:
Je suis grand.
versus 
J'ai cinq ans.

They both seem to mean "I am" in the above sentence.

I would be grateful for a clarification of the following:

In a sentence such as: Frank writes fast but Olivier writes as fast as him. "Frank écrit vite mais Olivier écrit ________ lui": why do we use the adjectival "aussi vite que "instead of the adverb "autant vite que"?  

In this sentence, "période pendant laquelle apparaissaient les fortes chaleurs," is "apparaissaient" the correct tense? 

Shouldn't it agree with the noun "période?" 

Hence "période pendant laquelle apparaissait les fortes chaleurs?"

I was doing an exercise that asked me to choose between pronom relatif simple or composé. I'm confused which one to use here.

La question........ j'aimerais une réponse est la suivante : où allons-nous ?

can I use que here?

Is there a specific reason that "beaucoup de" is not included in this lesson ?

It would be the term I would be most likely to use for "many".
