Hard to respond without the question, but ‘je suis demeuré ….’ would be correct for a state of mind, a state of being (physically or metaphysically) - synonym for ‘rester’ .
‘Avoir’ is used when demeurer is a synonym for ‘résider/habiter’ (not just ‘stopped’ somewhere.
