Hi Suzanne,

Indeed the preposition 'sans' ( opposite of 'avec') doesn't use any articles -

Je suis sortie sans argent = I went out without any money

Il est sortie sans parapluie = He went out without an umbrella 

You will sometimes use a possessive -

Je suis sortie sans mon sac = je suis sortie sans sac
