le sud versus du sud

In the sentence in the south of France the answer is le sud but in a previous exercise (Bastille Day) it was du sud.  Are both acceptable ?  Also in the best answer it is C'étaient but in the final paragraph it is C'était.  Are both correct or is this an error?

Hi Kay,

1. Without the actual context it is hard to say but I assume the sentence said

from/of the South of Francedu sud de la France

whereas here it is

dans un petit village dans le sud de la France = in a small village in the south of France

2. Both C'était and C'étaient are accepted as possible

Bonne Continuation!
