I used "nous cueillions des coquillages..." and it was marked wrong. Since, 'cueillir' means 'to pick; to gather; to collect', (just as 'ramasser') would it not be equally correct in this case? Is there a significant difference between the two verbs?

Could someone please explain why the auxiliary before apparu is était rather than avait ? The whole sentence is: 

Je me souviens encore distinctement de la manière dont j'étais restée bouche bée lorsque cette belle dame, qui avait l'air d'être faite de paillettes, était apparue gracieusement sur cet étrange engin.

What time does apres-midi change to soir?  When I was in West Africa and Haiti it was anytime after 12 noon, but I got those answers wrong.  I did not see a definition in the lesson.  Thanks :)

Is there anything grammatically or idiomatically wrong with "Je ne suis pas vraiment intéressé par la peinture"?

A little bit to fast for me. I'm (probably) A2 - ie, not quite at the dizzy heights of B1 (That seems to be an impossible dream at the moment).

Having read the transcript and read the translation, I was able to follow most (70%) of what the narrator was saying.

I thought French was supposed to be easy! (It isn't).

I'm killing myself trying to learn it. I'm a doctor and supposed to be smart but French is the hardest thing I've ever done....

HELP!

 Looking for more detail on these verbs, I couldn't find ANY French verb conjugation sites that conjugated verbs like AMUSER, MAQUILLER, REPOSER, or even DÉCÉDER with ÊTRE. They all use AVOIR. Why is that?

Apologies if this is the wrong topic, but does pense que express uncertainty such that it would be followed by a subjunctive?
