Wondering about my alternative answersI put in some different answers from what was accepted and wondered if any of the following were possible.
1. For "I really need to save", is it OK to use "il faut vraiment", or does "absolument" always naturally go with "il faut" ?
2. For "I've stopped buying expensive brands", can I also use the reflexive "Je me suis arrêtée d'acheter des marques chères" ?
3. For "and instead I've tried the supermarket brands" can we use "au lieu" in place of "à la place"?; and finally :
4. For "I must admit", can the verb "avouer" replace "admettre", as in "Je dois l'avouer..." or does this have a different sense ?
Thanks
I was wondering how you would put combien into a question with inversion; and I couldn't find any lessons adressing this specifically. This occurred to me while thinking about the question "How many words in the dictionary?" Would it be:
Combien de mots la dictionnaire a-t-elle?
Combien la dictionnaire a-t-elle de mots?
La dictionnaire a-t-elle combien de mots?
Or would it be something different?
Anyway, I just need to ease my curiosity.
Please explain to me why "que porte le maître en raquettes à neige" means the opposite, should it be "que le maître en raquettes à neige porte"?
L'Iftar veut dire le dîner, non? Le soohor est le petit-déjeuner. :)
What would be the difference between “I smell nothing” and I feel nothing”. I thought to feel in this case might require a reflexive construction?
Instead of
mon reste de ragoût
Could you say
Il reste de mon ragoût. ?
In this example, "Il a acheté deux burritos, mais il n'a mangé ni l'un ni l'autre", would it be equally correct to add "en": "Il a acheté deux burritos, mais il n'en a mangé ni l'un ni l'autre"? And why isn't it necessary anyway?
I wrote "Notre Salade aux Trois Fromages est [...] et assez copieuse" which was marked as incorrect. Looking at Le Robert, copieux is given as a synonym of consistant so I'm wondering why?
Does copieux mean more that the dish is physically large (ie a lot of food) whereas consistant just means it's filling but doesn't given any indication to the size of the meal?
I am confused by this example:
"I haven't left France for three years:" "Je n'ai pas quitté la France depuis trois ans."
The lesson says "we use PC because the negation indicates the action wasn't done during the entirety of that past period. BUT PC is used to express actions which were completed or finished in the past.
This example shows it WAS NOT completed, so why PC and not imparfait??
Thank you.
