Can someone distinguish for me the difference between the French cookie, petit gâteau, and biscuit. Does it depend on size or thickness?

The French term 'biscuit' is also known as 'petit gâteau' and 'gâteau sec' for what is known as biscuits (EN) and cookies (US).
Some biscuits will have their own regional names.
