Soupçonner vs. Suspecter

In this context, is suspecter inappropriate.   I considered soupçonner but my dictionary gave it as a second choice.  Are they not synonyms?

Bonjour Frank,

In this context "to suspect nothing", you will use "se douter de / soupçonner [qqch]"

I would say that the following is possible though: suspecter / soupçonner [quelqu'un] de [quelque chose] (context of a crime)

Je suspecte / soupçonne Marc d'avoir commis ce vol = I suspect Marc of having committed this theft

I hope this is helpful.

Bonne journée !
