Hi Carol,

I don't understand your query and cannot find any reference to 'la France',

which is correct, in the exercise pinned to this question.

Thanks Carol for clarifying your question but in fact most countries take an definite article -

le, la, or les .

The only exceptions are some islands or group of islands -

Cuba, Chypre (Cyprus), Malte (Malta), Haïti, Hawaï

and Israël is often shortened from l'État d'Israël.

Bonne Continuation!

I assume you are asking why definite articles are used - this usage is explained in the attached lesson link. Why - because that is what French does! Why «la France» - I suspect this was not your question as if so, you answered it - like most countries ending in «e» France is classified as a feminine noun for grammatical purposes.

The question I raised is why France gets an article in front of it when many other countries don't receive the same courtesy.  (whether the country in question is male or female seems not to be of consequence)

Thanks for the new answer, which does in fact respond to my original question.  Y'all are amazing!!
