Rapports & article in front of "amis"

Why is "rapports" plural in the first sentence?

Also, in the second sentence, why is there no article before "amis" ("On était amis"), but in another sentence, there is an article ("qu'on soit plus que des amis")?

Hi Gee,

1. Unlike in English, the word 'rapport' is in the plural when it means a relationship between people.

In the singular, it will mean simply a link between two things -

Il y a probablement un rapport entre ce qu'elle a entendu et ce qu'elle a décidé de faire = There's certainly a link between what she heard and what she decided to do

Take a look at this page with lots of examples of different meanings of the word -

2. Amis

we accept both

...qu'on soit plus que des amis

and

... qu'on soit plus qu'amis

and both are correct.

Bonne Continuation !
