present vs future tense after "ce weekend"

Question

why is recevrez, the future tense being asked for?  wouldn't ce weekend indicate a "near future action " and so take the present tense?

This lesson is about using the future tense so we wouldn't use the present here.
You could say -
Ce weekend nous recevons des amis = We are having friends over this weekend 
But you can also say -
Ce weekend nous allons recevoir des amis = This weekend we are going to have some friends over 
or
Ce weekend nous recevrons des amis = This weekend we'll have friends over

As a general rule, please quote the entire sentence you ask about. Context is always your friend.

Absent the sentence, I can only remark that what is near or not-so-near future is subjective and determined by context and the speaker's perception. There's no rule saying that "this weekend" is always futur proche or futur simple.
