I don’t understand the context in which I have to use it. Right now I’m learning that I have to use it with avant que and with jusqu’à ce que, but I don’t understand why it fits there.

The subjunctive is an important mood with several tenses but the present tense is the one you will use most often.
It does exist in English but isn't as used as it is in most Latin-rooted languages.
You will learn when it is required as you progress through the language.
