It sounds like he’s saying ‘ J’ai ouvert un emballage’, not ‘J’ai ouvert l’emballage’.

Definitely hear it as 'un emballage', which is what is written in the vocabulary list, and what makes sense in the context. If the transcription (which I can't access) is 'l'emballage', it is an error.

My first two listens I also heard 'un emballage' but when I listened with the expectation of hearing 'l'emballage', I could sort of hear it - it's just not very clear.

Agree, there is some unclear diction in that section - for A2 level, and by comparison to the others.
