faire vs jouer
This question relates to:French lesson "Faire de/jouer à : talking about sports, hobbies and leisure activities in French"
Asked 2 years ago
Carol, ‘jouer à’ is akin to ‘play’ in English. We don’t generally say ‘play a/at (aikido/martial arts)’ in English either. Just the way it is in both languages in this case. Just as in English, the way these expressions are generally used is somewhat idiomatic and best learnt by exposure to usage. There is a comment in the lesson on similar situations.
