Hi Carol

It is because the verb is -

avoir envie de quelque chose 

 

Dont = de que

If you used another verb like 'désirer', you would use 'que' only.

 

Le gâteau qu’elle désire=The cake that she wants
Désirer = to want ( no de

Carol, can you post the sentence?

“dont” will be associated with a “verb de” expression eg avoir envie de -  “Le gâteau dont elle a envie”, not “le gâteau qu’elle a envie (de)”
