Hi! I saw this answer in a test, and it said, ______ immenses vagues venaient vers moi. Two of the options were "D'" and "Des". I put 'Des' as the answer, but in the results, they said the correct answer was 'D' ". Can you explain please?

Thanks for understanding.

Hi Christophe,

https://kwiziq.learnfrenchwithalexa.com/questions/view/d-immenses-vagues-venaient-vers-moi-why-not-les-immenses-vagues#AnswerAddForm

The link above shows an answer to this problem which has been discussed many times on this forum.

The key point is -- what type of noun is being described? Is it a count noun and specific or a non-count or mass noun non-specific?

Further clarification is below but not the same information as that above:-

https://kwiziq.learnfrenchwithalexa.com/questions/view/d-immenses-vagues-venaient-vers-moi-why-not-les-immenses-vagues

These waves are made by water so we would expect that they will be described using the indefinite article "des" (countable) and when this article precedes an adjective the "des" becomes "de" and the "de" becomes d' before the adjective starting with a vowel.

Hope you find this useful.

Bonne continuation.

Jim
