as or es

Tu es means “you are”

So when you ask someone Are you hungry?

It should be

Tu es faim?

But why are we saying?

Tu as faim?

Hi Selvi,

In French, we use 'avoir' ( and not être) for expressing thirst, cold, hunger, fear, etc.

so it will be -

tu as faim? = are you hungry?

tu as froid? are you cold?

tu as soif? = are you thirsty?

tu as peur? = are you frightened?

Take a look at the following Kwiziq lesson -
