Avoir faim / soif = To be hungry / thirsty

Look at these examples:

J'ai faim.I am hungry.

Tu as soif.You are thirsty.

Vous avez faim, les enfants?You are hungry, kids?

The verb avoir (to have) is used to express hunger and thirst (and not être to be - as in English).

In French, we literally say I have hunger / I have thirst.
