Why the accent grave on à ?

Why the accent grave on à ?

Why is it "J'ai du mal à (verb)", instead of "J'ai du mal a (verb)"?

I only know we use it for locations, such as "Je suis à Paris"

Bonjour Nikolas,

"a" with no accents means "has" -> Conjugations of "avoir"

When expressing "to" + [verb], you use the preposition "à" +[infinitive verb]:

Verbs followed by the preposition à and an infinitive

More verbs followed by the preposition à and an infinitive

Take a look here too: Prepositional phrases

I hope this is helpful.

Bonne journée !
