When discussing about a feeling we had in the past don't we use L'imperatif?

Bonjour Sandunika,
I think you mean l'imparfait :-)
You can use either imparfait or passé composé, it depends on the situation.
J'étais malade = I was sick (ongoing)
J'ai été malade = I got sick (all of a sudden)
