using c'est and ce sont instead of il est, elle est, ils sont

Les tomates...  ce sont les dernières.

I am trying to understand why we are using ce sont les...

Is it because of the rule that says "c'est/ce sont" before "un, le, les, and possessive pronouns"?

Thank you.

Hi Rene,

Yes, it is because you cannot say,

elles sont les .

You could say -

Elles sont bonnes, ces tomates!

Hope this helps
