Why is "it" in this sentence "la" instead of "le:" Tu ne la lui écris pas.

Hi Lorie,
It is because in the case of the verb 'écrire' you automatically think we are talking about a letter which is,
la lettre
but I do agree with you that it isn't obvious.
If we were talking about an email ( un courriel, un mail) we would use 'le' -
Tu ne le lui envoies pas
