trop de vs tant de

Question

Can someone tell me what the difference between trop de(too much) and tant de(so much) is? I know the meanings of both , but unsure how to use them in sentences.

Bonjour Esther,
"trop de + [noun]" is a very common expression in French:

J'ai trop de cheveux blancs ! = I have too many white hair!
J'ai acheté trop de pain. = I bought too much bread.

"Tant de + [noun] " is a bit "soutenu" (i.e. formal):
Il y a tant d'obstacles à surmonter dans la vie ! = There are so many obstacles to overcome in life!
