To pitch a tent

Is the expression “planter une tente” out of date or is the concept slightly different ? I checked in the Oxford Dictionary for “to pitch a tent” and that’s what it came up with. In a way “monter une tente” makes perfect sense so i’m curious about “planter”

Hi Anita,

You are right "planter" is applicable "to pitch a tent" and hammering the pegs into the ground etc.

However, if we use "monter", the sense is of "erecting" a tent or "putting it up".

So I think that either verb is valid - perhaps it is a matter of style of expression.

Hope this helps.

Jim
