Why does repondre keep the d in the present tense when prendre loses it and yet they are supposed to follow the same rule as irregulars?

The d in prendre
This question relates to:French lesson "Conjugate prendre and derivatives in the present tense in French (Le Présent)"
Asked 3 years ago
Répondre (à) is not the same verb as reprendre. Répondre means to answer, to reply, and reprendre means to take back (and this is only one of many meanings.) I think you are perhaps confused about something. Répondre, prendre and reprendre all keep the d in the present singular conjugations.

Not sure where you mean they are different in present tense.
Je (Re)prends
tu (re)prends
il/elle/on (re)prend
nous (re)prenons
vous (re)prenez
ils/elles (re)prennent
There are many good conjugation references on line.

Sorry, misread the question early morning. Agree with Cary, répondre is not a derivative of prendre, and is not irregular in conjugation. Hence the endings for nous/vous/ils/elles for répondre are different.
