simile and metaphor in english

hi,

when you guys have this sentence as an example un riche comme cresus homme it was marked wrong is that because it should have something else describing the riche? Also as i'm searching to understand this should i treat these as like the similie and metaphors as we do in english?

thank you

Hi Nicole,

Just to reiterate what Maarten said -  it doesn't make any sense to put 'homme' at the end of the sentence

riche comme Crésus = as rich as Croesus

If you can let us know where this sentence comes from we can have a look at your particular error, but we suspect it is the additional 'homme' at the end.

These are similes ( FR - comparaisons) and there are lots in French like the following ones with adjectives using animal references  -

fort comme un bœuf

doux comme un agneau

rusé comme un renard

têtu comme une mule

malin comme un singe

noir comme un corbeau

fier comme un paon

Nicole, I think Jim is indicating that questions about possible incorrect answers, or seeking explanation of quiz answers, are best submitted directly through report button as they can be linked. If submitting here however, the question and answer in full should be included as otherwise no-one can provide a response directly - not the community, nor the Kwiziq team. There is an expression ‘riche comme Crésus ’ but it would seem to make little sense to add “homme” at the end of this expression, do you mean “un homme riche comme Crésus” ?

Oh okay but no I took the quiz it wasn't an error it was just a mistake I had made in choosing it correctly. And homme was definitely at the end of cresus.

Thanks
