I don't understand why animal familier is used in this exercise, but is considered unacceptable in the other writing challenges in this group.

Thank you for your excellent contribution! This has now been amended in all 3 exercises: animal familier/domestique/de compagnie are now all included as correct options.

Personally I have only ever used 'animal domestique' for 'pet' but language evolves and in this particular exercise, you are given 'animal de compagnie' and 'animal familier'. 
I will flag this up but do you have a particular writing challenge in mind?

Thank you."A new pet", and "Caring for a dog or a cat", both released as exercises this week along side this one. Animal familier is not accepted by either.
