Quant à mes amis, ils ont largement de quoi faire avec leur propre famille !

Question

I always have difficulty deciding whether it should be 'leur' or 'leurs' in these circumstances. I opted for 'leurs' this time and it was marked right - both ar accepted here! But thinking about the logic, it seems to me that it should have been 'leur': There are lots of friends, but each of them just has one family - so 'leur'.

Or am I barking entirely up the wrong tree here ?

As you say, both are accepted by grammar and Kwiziq, although I would favour the singular 'leur' personally.
It depends on how you look at it. 
This is the explanation I have found -
 "leur famille" (singular) could mean either:
a) They all belong to the same family.
b) Each person has one family (which is usually the case).
 "leurs familles" (plural) emphasizes that each person has a separate family.
