Present vs. future tense for the verb trouver

"Quand il y a un problème...", to me, implies future. Why present tense?

This is a simple narrative, describing a situation as it is now. Present tense is commonly used in English and in French in such a narrative. Also, if it was to be seen as a description of what the child has already experienced/witnessed, an ‘historical perspective’, present tense is also commonly used in French rather than past tense.
