Prepositions with islands

Hi,

I wondered whether islands take the feminine gender?  For instance, how would one say:

in/to/ from Sri Lanka; and

in/to/from Ceylon

Thanks,

Yvette.

Hi Yvette,

It depends on the islands as many don't have  articles like Chypre ( Cyprus) , or Cuba so you will say -

Je vais à Chypre/à Cuba cette année

Je viens de Chypre/de Cuba

In the case of Sri Lanka, it has a masculine article -

Le Sri Lanka

so the same rules apply as for masculine or feminine countries :

Je vais au Sri Lanka

Je viens du Sri Lanka

But if talking of La Guadeloupe  or La Martinique -

Je viens de la Martinique/de la Guadeloupe

Je vais en Martinique /en Guadeloupe

Hope this helps!
