On n'attend plus que Maman nous joigne

On n'attend plus que Maman nous joigne

This is given as a version of 'we are only waiting for Mum to join us'.

But couldn't it also mean 'we are no longer waiting for Mum to join us'?

Hi Tom,

This is an interesting question.

In fact, to avoid confusion you would use 's'attendre à ce que' to convey an expectation rather than just waiting for something to happen.

On ne s'attend plus à ce que Maman nous joigne

in other words,

she won't be coming now

Hope that helps!
