For The exhibition also showed the history of the place, I put, L'exhibition montait également l'histoire du lieu, whereas the correction told me it was L'exposition montrait également l'histoire du lieu. Doesn't the extra 'r' indicate 'would show' rather than "showed"?

montait vs montrait
2 different verbs with different meanings - monter (climb/go up) and montrer (show).
It seems from what you wrote that you specifically chose ‘montait’ because of a blip about the difference between imparfait and conditional?
Imparfait and conditional conjugations have the same endings making learning them a bit easier, but not simple ! The difference in conjugation for regular ‘- er’ verbs between imparfait and conditional is
1. imparfait drops the ‘-er’ ending and uses just the stem of the verb (montrer gives montr- and monter gives mont-)
2. conditional uses the full infinitive with the-er ending included (montrer gives montrer- and monter give monter-)
Hope this helps.

Bonjour Sydney,
The verb is montrer and third person conjugation for l'imparfait is montrait and for Conditionnel montrerait.
So I think that you have made a simple error in the l'imparfait conjugation by writing montait rather than montrait.
Hope this helps.
Bonne continuation
Jim
