Why is j'ai envie not followed by du or de la with food items, as is usually the case.

J'ai envie
This question relates to:French writing exercise "At the mountain restaurant"
Asked 5 years ago

Hi Ann,
I believe that the only time you would use a partitive after 'avoir envie de' would be if a singular item of food was to follow -
J'ai envie d'une glace, d'une banane, d'une pomme
But,
j'ai envie de chocolat
J'ai envie de frites
But a good point!
