Question: I'm confused as to why we use "de" in this expression rather than a definite article like "le" or "la".  The expression doesn't use ne...pas, therefore isn't negative? Not sure.  Please explain, thanks.

HI Gene,

The verb 'se tromper de quelque chose' means to get something wrong so its sense is negative you don't need the ne...pas which would mean the opposite - not to get something wrong

Take a look at this entry from the Larousse dictionary for more examples of its use-

"se tromper verbe pronominal intransitif [commettre une erreur]    to make a mistake

se tromper dans une addition/dictée  = to get a sum/dictation wrong

je me suis trompé de 11 euros  = I was 11 euros out (UK) OU off (US)

je ne m'étais pas trompé de beaucoup =   I wasn't far wrong OU far off (US)

[prendre une chose pour une autre]  = to mistake one thing for another

se tromper de jour  =  to get the day wrong

se tromper de bus  =  to get on the wrong bus"

Hope it helps!
