"How are your holidays going?"

With "How are your holidays going?"  Why is "Comment vont vos vacances."  not acceptable?

 Bonjour Larry,

Alan’s and Chris’s answers are great! In this context, the general rule is to use ‘aller’ with people although as Chris mentioned ‘aller’ can be heard with 'travail' for example (and yet, it is still very familiar / colloquial). It is best to use ‘aller’ with people and ‘se passer’ is used with inanimate objects.

Comment se passent tes vacances? = How are you holidays going?

Ton anniversaire s’est bien passé? How was your birthday?

Comment va ta famille ? = How is your family?

Comment vont tes parents? = How are your parents?

To supplement Chris’ comment with ‘aller’ - rather colloquial

Comment ça va au travail ? = How are things at work?

Comment ça va, le travail ? How is work?

Comment va le travail ? = How is work going?

Comment se passe le travail ? How is your work going? → the better option

I hope this is helpful.

Bonne journée !

The lesson is about se passer. The phrase suggested by you is not helpful in this context.

I assume this is from a kwiz, because it's been asked before. When you're doing a kwiz, you don't know what the grammar lesson is, so there should be some reason why this is wrong.

Aurélie wrote previously:

"Aller in this context is used for people, but not for events.

It means "how are you?" in the sense of "how are you going [health/life-wise]?", so it doesn't work for inanimate objects."

I'm a bit surprised, though, because I thought you could say something like "comment va ton travail ?"

I don't think it is a hard and fast rule that aller is only used for people. It might have been the case some time ago. Today, you hear it used for pretty much everything.
