how about gagner?
This question relates to:French lesson "Differences between French and English usages - Passer un exam vs To pass an exam"
Asked 1 year ago
Bonjour Radhika,
Gagner is a transitive verb so takes a direct object.
It is used in situations of winning (an argument), or at sport, or to gain something -- profit, support or to augment a situation.
It is not apt in the case of achieving success in an exam situation, but I suspect that one could say that they won success in the exam. I don't see this usage as being appropriate grammatically, however.
This is my understanding -- hope it helps.
Bonne journée
Jim
