In my book 501 French verbs it teaches that the verb habiter doesn't require a preposition so, J'habite cette maison, is acceptable.
Is "J'habite à [city] an exception? Is "J'habite [city]" acceptable?

Both "J'habite à [city]" and "J'habite [city]" are acceptable, although nowadays I seem to hear more of the former than the latter.
