Dix mille roses

Dix mille roses

Annie a gagné dix ________ euros.

This was my question, then I answered 'Annie a gagné dix milliers d'euros'.

The system did not accept it. ..okay, maybe I wrote dix milliers de euros - instead of d'.. I guess that was the problem.

However, the explanation I had, was 'Annie a gagné dix mille euros'.

Can I also use the other option above, 'dix milliers d'euros'?

Merciiiiii

Bonjour Vicky,

‘Mille’ or ‘milliers d’...’ are both correct answers for this question. However, ‘millers de’ isn’t accepted as a correct answer here.

If you feel you have not been marked incorrectly in a kwiz, please use the ‘report it’ button via the Correction board.

I hope this is helpful.

Bonne journée!

mille = thousand. It is always in singular. un mille, deux mille, etc. This is like the English "thousand": Il y avait deux-mille-cinq-cents personnes. -- There were 2500 people.

millier = "a thousand-hood", a group of thousand viewed as a unity. Millier does exist in plural form. It is mostly used to express something in terms of thousands, almost never to specify an exact quantity. It is used more figuratively and not so much meaning exactly one thousand.

Il y avait des milliers de soldats. -- There were thousands of soldiers.
Il y avait deux milliers de soldats. -- There were 2000 ("two thousand-hoods") of soldiers.
