davantage vs plus

davantage vs plus

"À l'avenir, je devrai t'écouter davantage."

In the future, I'll have to listen to you more.

Are there any rules around when to use davantage vs plus, or are they interchangeable? Could I have used:

"À l'avenir, je devrai t'écouter plus." ?

Thanks

Bonjour Patrick,

This is a matter of choice, often 'davantage' is preferable as it is deemed more stylish.

Here are some examples of when you would use it in preference to plus -

End of a sentence: 'Davantage' is often used at the end of a sentence, whereas 'plus' is typically followed by something else.

J'en veux davantage = I want more of it

Emphasis: 'Davantage' can be used for added emphasis or to stress the idea of 'more'.

Il faut travailler davantage = We need to work more/harder

Comparative constructions: 'Davantage' is used in certain comparative constructions, especially when comparing two actions or states.

Il dort davantage qu'avant = He sleeps more than before

Avoiding repetition: 'Davantage' can be used to avoid repeating 'plus' if it's already been used in the sentence.

Plus on lit, plus on apprend, et on veut lire davantage = The more we read, the more we learn, and we want to read more

Bonne Continuation!
