Does anyone know why you say:
Je joue du piano but then you say: Je joue de la harpe
Does anyone know what the rule is for if you use Je joue de la or Je joue du?

It depends on the gender of the instrument. Le piano is masculine so it is de + le = du
La harpe is feminine so it is de + la
As another example, one would say: Je joue de la batterie ( La batterie -drums- a feminine noun).
