I would like to know why retenir means "to learn" here and not apprendre

Ivie, not sure which example or section gives rise to your question ?

However, words can have more than one meaning depending on context, and it would be unusual to have only 1 word in a language to describe an abstract idea or concept, or even for a specific physical ‘thing’.
