C'est vs Il/Elle

"because it is tiny and typical."

In this statement, the correct answer is to use c'est instead of il/elle. Why is that?

Hi Courtney,

In fact both 'c'est' and 'il est' (referring to the village of Porto which is masculine) are accepted.

If this is not the case please let us know.

The only wrong answer in that sentence would be 'elle est' as we no longer talk about 'la Corse' but 'le village de Porto'.

Hope this helps!

Bonjour Courtney,

This issue is very tricky to get correct  --  there are numerous former posts on this aspect of French Grammar:-

"C'est" vs "Il/Elle est" to say it is/she is/he is in French

If the reference is quite specific then Il / Elle est,  but when more general then c'est is used.

The statement is general (or an opinion) about an aspect of this Island.

I hope that this helps.

Bonne continuation

Jim
