Avoir du mal à or avec

Question

What is the difference between avoir du mal à and avoir du mal avec. I was marked wrong for avoir du mal à (math) but the lesson seems to indicate one can use either. Thanks.

In practical terms, if you used 'avoir du mal à '( maths) it would be avec because you are using a noun and not a verb -

J'ai du mal avec les maths = I struggle with maths 
J'ai du mal avec l'ordinateur = I struggle with computers
J'ai du mal avec les devoirs = I struggle with homework

avoir du mal avec + noun 
BUT

J'ai du mal à faire ce devoir = I struggle doing this homework
J'ai du mal à écrire = I find it hard to write
J'ai du mal à comprendre = I struggle to understand

avoir du mal à + verbe à l'inifinitif
so strictly speaking you cannot use either in every case.

Thanks, Jim. So it has to do with trouble DOING something (à) as opposed to struggling WITH something (avec).

Yes, but what about avoir du mal à faire (math) ?  Or in my case avoir du mal à faire l’orthographe ?  Perhaps one doesn’t faire l’orthographe ?
