It is because both are possible.

It is interesting to note that Aurélie used both  'l'année dernière' and 'l'an prochain' in the same passage, which shows that if you are the result of French education you are programmed to vary expressions whenever possible for stylistic purposes but I can understand how that might confuse learners.
