Is un repas an acceptable alternative to un dîner ?

I think "un repas" would signify a meal, whereas it seems that Geraldine would be giving a fancy "dinner," as in perhaps a dinner-party.

I also put "chez nous," but in getting it wrong, I think it is the difference between saying they will stay "at home" instead of "at our house"-- which is also more of how we might say it in English, too.
