accompagnée/accompagnées - resurrecting this topic ;)

Les odeurs envoûtantes qui émanaient de ce coin de paradis… …m'ont accompagnée tout au long de ma vie, telle la madeleine de Proust. ———- Should “accompagnée” be “accompagnées”. The passé composé (avoir, with object before the verb) past participle should agree with the object. It does partially (in gender), but not with respect to singular/plural.

Chris W.C1 Kwiziq Q&A super contributor Correct answer

The rule is that the direct object (COD) preceding the auxiliary verb avoir determines number and gender of the participle. In the sentence you quote, the COD is me. If the speaker is female, then you need accompagnéeLes odeurs is the subject of the sentence, not the COD.

Bonjour Brian,

Chris is correct ! Follow the link here for more details: Special cases when the past participle agrees in number and gender with avoir as the auxiliary

I hope this is helpful.

Bonne journée !
