Which brown?

If "brun" is for fur, skin, and hair, why are the dogs and the mouse "marron"?

If referring specifically to the dog's or mouse's hair/skin/fur, you would use brun, but in these cases the reference is to the animal generally, and therefore 'marron' is used.
