Whether to include the definite article "le" when asking for someone's preference

In French, what is the difference between "Tu préfères le café ?" and "Tu préfères café ?" when asking for someone's preference for coffee?

Is the distinction the same as in English, where "the coffee" is specific to a particular coffee in the current context? And "coffee" without the article is talking about coffee in general?

In general we only deal with questions regarding a kwiziq lesson and not any outside inquiries. What lesson would this question be in regards to?
